HIV/AIDS was first reported in the USA in the early 1980s. Early reports came from San Francisco or California among the population of men who have sex with men. It was originally known as an illness to affect this population of people but it then later spread to heterosexual individuals (men who have sex with women).
@255heaa27 the research to find a cure lives on. There is also research into trying to makes vaccines to prevent infection (preventative vaccines) and to also help slow down infection in those who are already infected (prophylactic vaccines). There was a huge trial recently of an HIV preventative vaccine called the STEP trial but it was unable to prevent infections.
Work is also ongoing on trying to find other ways to prevent infection by using what are called microbicides, gel used to help prevent infections.
