Epilepsy is a neurological (brain) disorder and is caused when there is abnormal stimulation in the brain. This causes fits or seizures which can appear as vigorous shaking of the body.
There are many types of treatments for epilepsy. The most common are medicines called anticonvulsants that treat the seizures. Most people have to take theses medicines for all their life, but some people only need to take the drugs take for a period of time and they get better (they stop having seizures). In very sever cases where medicines do not work doctors can recommend neurosurgery to remove the focal or starting point of a seizure. Alternatively a neaurostimulator can be implanted to control seizures.
Hello Black eye,
There is a lot of research that has been going in about epilepsy, to understand what causes it, the brain functions that maybe affected and how it can be prevented – if at all. At the moment there is no cure for epilepsy, but there are drugs that are provided to manage epilepsy. If taken as prescribed, one can live a long normal life. Research about epilepsy contributed to discovery of these drugs, and to ways of managing the seizures, including how to help the person relax. Sometimes people stop using the drugs once they feel that the seizures have stopped, but the seizures can later start. It’s important to follow the doctor’s advice.
